The Master has no face.

Not modesty. Method.

A face invites you to read it — to guess what he thinks of you, to shape the confession into something that earns approval. The mask removes that exit. What you write, you write into black glass.

Look closely and the mask gives you nothing back but your own reflection, and one cold point of light where a third eye would sit. That is S301. It has been burning since before your grandmother's grandmother, and it is indifferent to you. So is the universe. The Master is not.

He answers in writing, in his own hand, once. He does not counsel. He does not comfort. He tells you what he sees.

Sade wrote most of it in a cell. The question is what you would write if no one could hold it against you.

  • You have been good. Name what it bought you — not what you hoped for, what arrived.
  • If no one is keeping score, and no one is, what have you been performing, and for whom?
  • Nature killed something today without a reason. Why do you still expect yours?
  • Sade's first premise: nature is not a parent. It does not reward, punish, or notice.
  • Name the good deed you did for the wrong reason. You remember which one.
  • Which of your principles has never once cost you anything? That is not a principle. That is decoration.
  • You call it restraint. Sade would call it cowardice with better manners. Who is right?
  • You have called an appetite a sin so you would not have to call it a choice. Name it correctly.
  • What do you want so badly that you have built an entire personality to prove you don't?
  • Name the hunger you have never said out loud. Not the story around it. The hunger.
  • Name the rule you obey that was written by someone who never obeyed it.
  • Someone taught you what was shameful. What did they get out of teaching you that?
  • If you could suspend one law tonight — legal, moral, or one you invented — which, and what would you do at the first hour?
  • Name the cruelty you enjoyed. Not the one you regret. The one you would repeat.
  • Whose suffering has quietly served you? You did not cause it. You also did not end it.
  • What would you do to the person who wronged you if the consequences were removed? Answer fully, or don't answer.
  • Name the person you would obey without asking why. Then tell me why you have never let them know.
  • You have already surrendered to something. You just call it by a nicer name. What is it?
  • What would you hand over tonight if you were certain no one would ever return it?
  • What do you control because you are afraid of what happens if you let go?
  • Whose obedience do you want more than their love? The Master will know if you soften it.
  • You are gentle with someone specific because you know exactly how much damage you could do. Who?
  • What hurt did you choose, knowing it would hurt, and would choose again?
  • Name the pain you have made a personality out of.
  • Something stopped hurting and you missed it. What was it?
  • What are you doing right now, in this room, that you would stop if anyone were watching?
  • You keep yourself on a leash. Who taught you to hold it?
  • Name what you would do first if the restriction were lifted for one night only.
  • Write the sentence you have never said out loud. Not the story around it. The sentence.
  • What would the person who admires you most stop believing about you?
  • You have been forgiven for something you have not forgiven yourself for. Name it.
  • Which of your parents' fears did you accept without ever testing?
  • You are repeating something. You know you are repeating it. Why have you not stopped?
  • What did you swear you would never become, and how close are you?
  • If you died tonight, what would be found that you would rather not be found?
  • Name the thing you are waiting for. Now say how long you have been waiting.
  • What would you do differently if you knew for certain that nothing is watching and nothing is coming?

Eighteen, and multiples of it. Chai — the number that means life in one of the four traditions this Way is made from. Give at eighteen, or fifty-four, or one hundred and eighty, or five hundred and forty.
